BVAF 5k Road Championships

Portsmouth August 28th 2000

Mick O'Doherty is the new men's BVAF 5k road champion after leading home the field at Portsmouth. On a traffic-free course that started and finished in the Mountbatten Stadium, he was almost half a minute ahead of Westbury Harriers team-mate Chris Buckley in a highly creditable time of 15:15. Steve Robinson of Bingley Harriers was third.

Other age group winners were Martyn Flower (M45) of City of Portsmouth, who were M40-49 team winners, Peter Hyde of Altrincham (M50), John Treadwell of Vets AC (M55), Harry Clayton of Bristol (M60), Mick Ward of Oswestry Olympians (M65), Derek Howarth of Leigh (M70) and Norman Copping of Ipswich Jaffa (M75).

It was a local runner, Zara Hyde-Peters of Havant, who was the overall women's champion in 17:09, but not far behind was W45 Bronwen Cardy-Wise of Bromsgrove, with Nicola Haines-Jones of Newport third. In 4th place overall was W40 winner Frances Gill of Neath. Other age group winners were Carole Fereday of Newport (W50), Elaine Statham of Stone Master Marathoners (W55), Pamela Jones of Ilford (W60), Judy Rowntree of Havant (W65) and Grace Bulger of New Forest Runners (W80).
