The Horwich 5K is a unique event and the LOC always ensure the event runs smoothly. This year it was not only a competitive race but promoted on a very hot day and most members were glad that it was only 5K. The results highlight how competitive the age groups were with the M70 proving that age is no barrier to fast times. It would be difficult to find a better venue for a 5K and I hope the LOC will be prepared to accommodate us in 2018.
The BMAF multi terrain championships were incorporated into the North Downs 30K and promoted by Istead and Ifield Harriers on the 25th June. Safety is a priority at this event with over 100 marshals and with most of the protruding tree roots sprayed. The event is described as scenic, challenging and iconic. I would describe it as one of the best Trail races I have ever run and my opinion is typical of the feedback I received after the event from our members. It was good to witness more M35’s attending which led to a very competitive race upfront. I must record my thanks to Trevor Edgley of the promoting club who helped me throughout the proceedings. Next year it was suggested that the BMAF should promote a short and a long course championships. With Trail running growing in popularity this may be wise advice.
Results are to be found for both events under the Results tab.
I am working on the dates and venues for next year. The BMAF promote Championships at 5K, 10K, 10 miles, the Half and the full Marathon. Please make contact if you have a special event that warrants my attention at walterhelen@ hotmail.co.uk.
I always aim to spread races across Great Britain with the Marathon in September or October to avoid a clash with London.
The 10 mile and Half are normally planned to be build up races for London or the BMAF marathon.
This year the 10 miles championships were promoted with the help of Cumberland AC in Maryport in February. I am very tempted to return in 2018 as this is a small event where all our needs are met at a very fair entry fee.
