Clare’s reasons for entering the Championships
My name is Clare Elms. I have been competing for the last 17 years averaging over 50 races a year, so well over 1000 in total. I race on the road, xc, indoors and outdoors on the track from short races up to the marathon distance.
I walk my dog with my Mum who is 90yrs every morning. Her motto is ‘use it or lose it’ ! Age is just a number. I really recommend joining a Masters club and giving Masters competitions and the BMAF Championship a try. It could be life changing for you too! You don’t know until you try!
Competing has changed my life, it has given me confidence and a purpose, but most of all, I’ve met so many amazing people and travelled to so many different places that I would never have visited.
I joined Vets AC when I first started running many years ago. Being a member of a Masters club gives me the opportunity to race against other Masters athletes and race in Championships all over the world. The great thing about masters athletics is the fact that the races are divided into 5 year age groups. as I have got older I have appreciating this even more! There is always an incentive to stay motivated.
I have been lucky enough to have had a lot of success but had I not started running in my 40s I wouldn’t even known that these amazing competitions existed nor that I might actually been quite successful. Running on the track is such fun, indoors when cold outside and outdoors in the summer, and every standard of runner is made so welcome!
I have set over 50 British and World age group records and won numerous World and European titles.
