All work, no play
Chairing the AGM, the Track & Field Championship and not forgetting organising the Inter-Area, all caught up with our hands-on hard working Chairman Arthur Kimber as he faded over the last lap of his 800m here to finish 14th. He is also Team Manager and a Delegate to the General Assembly; little time left to enjoy his trip Down Under!
Brilliant Caroline Powell
One of our most illustrious sprinters Caroline Powell, SWVAC, convincingly defended her World W60 100m title in 14.16sec here on the 2nd day. Brenda Fee who has just moved into the W70 group, sped to silver. It was silver also for Michelle Thomas, MMAC, 12.91 won by Emmanuelle McGovern USA in 12.80, wind 1.5. Claire Spurway finished 5th in the W35 final.
The second and third days of the WMA Track & Field Championships are always the most difficult for the Meet Director to schedule as there will always be the very good pole vaulter in the Decathlon or high jumper aiming for maximum points to delay the timetable in such a tight timetable, but the medals rolled in from the British competitors.
A strong wind however is making it difficult for some. It did not affect the Women’s 50-plus triple jump, dominated by the Eastern Europeans. Pat Oakes SCVAC cleared 6.41m for 3rd, Iris Holder got silver in the W75
Philip Spivey won the M55 hammer reaching out to 60.08m and Stephen Whyte got his second medal, silver in the M45 throw.
