Ian’s reasons for entering the Championships
Having been out of athletics for many years, in 2014 I decided to have a go at the British Masters Indoor Pentathlon Championships.
It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
I didn’t do especially well, but that didn’t matter, because everyone was so encouraging and supportive of one another that I had to come back for more. Since then I have competed in both indoor and outdoor championships, as well as on the road with race walking.
I’ve made some fantastic friends along the way and had a lot of fun. I’ve also improved and to date have 18 British Masters gold medals and a number of silvers and bronzes.
A Health Setback
In 2023 I was diagnosed with cancer and thought I’d have to give it all up. No chance! After nearly a year of treatment (chemo and operation – yuk!) I am back competing and although not as fast, that doesn’t matter, I’m still race walking in British Masters events on track and roads, I’m even back to leaping into sandpits and flopping over high jump bars.
Age and illness do not always have to stop you from taking part, so have a go!
