Adrian’s reasons for entering the Championships

It’s easy to find reasons not to compete: too busy, too tired, too slow, or perhaps, “It’s been years since I set foot on a track.” But the real question is—why should you?

Take it from me, Adrian, a 73-year-old who faced a couple of extra hurdles last year—prostate cancer and thymoma. I had major surgery twice, a prostatectomy in May and a sternotomy in July. Athletics helped me not only recover but also thrive.

Why do I keep showing up? Simple: to prove that I can.

What’s it all about?

Athletics isn’t just about personal bests or podium finishes (though those are nice too). It’s about:

  • Staying fit: Training keeps your body strong, which can make a huge difference when life throws unexpected challenges your way.
  • Building resilience: The discipline and determination you develop as an athlete carry over into every aspect of life.
  • Community and camaraderie: You’ll find inspiration and support from people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • A sense of achievement: Finishing the event—whether first or last—reminds you of what you’re capable of.

Last year, despite everything, I competed in the World Masters Championships in August and more recently, the BMAF Indoor Pentathlon last month. Was I the fastest or the best? No. Did I have a great time proving to myself what I could still do? Absolutely.

Now it’s your turn. The BMAF Indoor Track and Field Championships are on 22nd and 23rd February. It’s the perfect chance to test yourself again, or reconnect with athletics, and celebrate what you can achieve—whatever your reasons may be.

So, why will you enter? Maybe it’s to chase a medal, to meet new people, or simply, like me, to prove that you can. Whatever your reason, we’ll see you at Lee Valley.
