I do hope you are able to read the tribute to Danny Herman which appeared in Man.City  programme in Jan 2026. Danny was a brilliant athlete representing Cheshire , Northern Counties, and winning an indoors international G B vest.

He also won many competitions representing  British Masters at National and international level.

For 10 years he worked along side Arthur Kimber(Chairman) as treasurer for  B M A F. During his period in charge of B M A F finances he ran a tight and successful team.

Manchester City was saddened to hear of the passing of Danny Herman earlier this month – the man Mike Summerbee says was a secret weapon in the great years of the 1960s and 1970s.

Danny, who passed away at the age of 90, lived a truly remarkable life – despite the toughest of beginnings.

He arrived in this country as a three-year-old fleeing the Nazis, catching the last boat before the outbreak of the Second World War.

Danny lost more than 30 relatives in concentration camps and spent his last few years increasingly involved in Holocaust education, sharing his story in numerous schools in the North West.

Indeed, he was awarded a British Empire Medal in the King’s New Year’s Honours List for services to Holocaust education and awareness.

From a young age, Danny showed great talent for running and this passion continued as he attended the University of Manchester to study Commerce. He became a county champion and represented Manchester Athletics Club in the years that followed.

This eventually led to his involvement with Manchester City when Malcolm Allison recruited him to work as fitness trainer for the first team, a position he held between 1967 and 1972.

Summerbee, in particular, was glowing in his admiration for the work done by Danny as he called that talented team’s conditioning levels “outrageous” and at a “different level” from rivals.

The Blues came from behind to beat West Brom after extra-time in the 1970 League Cup final on a quagmire pitch that required elite strength and stamina, and it’s fair to say the Wembley triumph can be tracked back to the work done by Herman alongside Olympic athlete and former world mile record holder Derek Ibbotson as well as 20-mile world record holder and sports journalist, Joe Lancaster.

In total, City won four honours during his era – the League title, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

His son, Keith, spoke glowingly of his father’s association with City.

“Dad’s love of City was passed on to all the family in true blue style. We are all so proud of his achievements in life and the stories he told us about his time with the team in the 60s and 70s.

“It will always make me so proud – he loved it! And I think the players loved him too!”

Danny later became a chartered accountant, was married to Pat and had four children, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Everyone at Manchester City would like to send our condolences to Danny’s family and friends.
